President Muhammadu Buhari, has, in commemoration of this year’s Teachers Days, has described as “grave and unfortunate” the treatment meted to teachers despite the role they play in shaping the future of the society.

The President made this observation in a press statement made available to Naija News by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu on Friday Night.

The President, who described teachers as unsung heroes of our country, stated that they daily mould the minds of our country’s youth, our leaders of today and tomorrow.

“Teachers are the most important segment of workers in our country, invaluable for the essential work they do towards building our country’s future. Teaching is a noble profession, wielding a strong influence by inspiring and educating our children. The values they inculcate stay with them for a lifetime,” the President notes.

The President said that he is not unaware that in some states and local councils of the federation, teachers are being owed salaries of several months.

The president lamented that despite the effort of the federal government to find solution to problems of unpaid salaries, by the release of billions of naira as bailout funds to various states, the problem of unpaid salaries to teacher still remains an issue.

President Buhari assures Nigeria’s teachers that his heart is with them in this regard, and he will continue to work with the state governments to ensure that all salary arrears are not just cleared, but that unpaid salaries become an issue of the past.
