Police Arrest 2 Policemen, 12 Others For Alleged Theft, Vandalism Of Rail Tracks

The Nigeria Police command attached to the Nigerian Railway, in Enugu has said that it has apprehended 14 persons accused of alleged vandalism and theft of property belonging to the Nigerian Railway Corporation.

The Area Commander in-charge of the Eastern District Police Area Command, Mr Henry Njoku, made the fact of the arrest of the suspects known to newsmen on Monday in Enugu.

Two policemen were also arrested, according to the Area Commander, for conspiring with other suspects and also shielding the suspects from arrest.

Njoke said the policemen risk sanctions like possibility of dismissal, after they must have faced orderly room trial.

He said that most of the suspects were arrested between midnight and 2 a.m. on September 15, while carrying out the act

He said that the arrest was made possible through intelligence report and painstaking investigation in the past two months.

He said that the command had recorded a lot of vandalism within Isiagu-Izuakoli-Mbaeke-Umuhia sections and Emene-Ogui-Ogbete sections of the Eastern Corridors.

Njoku said, “We are strategising to ensure that we put a stop to this growing trend of sabotage to the economy of the nation.

“The activities of the vandals are denying the people of this part of the country the opportunity to enjoy train services.”

He estimated the items stolen or vandalized from the corporation as having total worth billions of naira.
