Here Are The Major Nigerian Newspaper Headlines For Friday, 31st August, 2018

1. President Buhari departs for China today

President Muhammadu Buhari will today, Friday depart for China to participate in the 7th Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) scheduled to hold September 3 – 4, 2018 in Beijing Naija News understands.

The President’s first engagement in Beijing will be an interactive session with the Nigerian Community in China at the Nigerian Embassy.

2. Bukola Saraki declares 2019 presidential ambition

The senate president, Dr Bukola Abubakar Saraki has declared his intention to contest as Nigeria’s President come 2019.

He made his intention to run for president known on Thursday at Sheraton Hotel in Abuja while addressing young politicians and aspirants who are interested in running for public office in 2019.

3. APC to pick presidential candidate through direct primaries

The All Progressives Congress (APC) during its sixth National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Thursday, has resolve to pick its presidential candidate through direct primary at a date to be announced later.

Also, the APC’s NEC decided to adopt indirect primaries or delegate system for other positions – governors, national and state assemblies.

4. Bamidele returns to Nigeria after treating gun injury in the US

Mr. Opeyemi Bamidele, a former House of Representatives member, has returned to Nigeria from the United States where he went for medical treatment following gunshot wounds he sustained during the campaign for the Ekiti State governorship election.

He was hit by a stray bullet during the build up to the July 14 governorship election in Ekiti, and was received at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, at about 3pm on Thursday.

5. Dogara and Lasun absent at APC NEC meeting

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara; and his deputy, Suleiman Lasun are absent from the on-going National Executive Committee meeting of the All Progressives Congress.

Adams Oshiomhole, the APC National Chairman, however apologized on their behalf at the meeting.

6. Fela Durotoye emerges consensus presidential candidate for young politicians

The presidential candidate of the Alliance For A New Nigeria (ANN), Fela Durotoye, has been chosen to by the Presidential Aspirants Coming Together (PACT) group to contest the 2019 presidential seat in Nigeria.

Presidential Aspirants Coming Together (PACT) is a coming together of various young presidential aspirants who believe they can work together to wrest power from the old political class.

7. MTN rejects CBN’s order to refund $8.1b

MTN Nigeria on Thursday refuted the claims by the Central Bank of Nigeria that it illegally, in collusion with four Nigerian banks repatriated $8.1billion from its Nigerian operations to offshore investors.

The CBN said the remittances between 2007 and 2015, in tranches of of 2.63 billion dollars, 1.766 billion dollars and 348 million dollars were done in violation of the rule that says it can only be done with regular ‘Certificates of Capital Importation (CCIs)’ issued by the apex bank.

8. Buhari, Osinbajo, others attend APC NEC meeting

The All Progressives Congress (APC), yesterday held its NEC meeting in Abuja as it puts further plans in place for the 2019 general elections.

President Buhari, Vice President Osinbajo, as well as many party leaders were in attendance at the meeting which held in Abuja.

9. Tambuwal picks PDP presidential nomination form

Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto state, yesterday, picked up the presidential nomination form of the PDP.

Tambuwal recently defected from the APC to the PDP.

10. Modric emerges 2018 UEFA player of the year

Real Madrid and Croatia midfielder, Luka Modric, on Thursday received the award of UEFA Player of the Year in Monaco after his Champions League exploits.

He beat Portugal’s Christiano Ronaldo and Egypt’s Mohammed Salah to the prestigious award.
