Third Mainland Bridge To Be Closed For Three Days

The third mainland bridge in Lagos would be closed to all forms of traffic for three days effective from midnight of today (Thursday).

The temporary closure of the 11.8-kilometre bridge is to allow contractors investigate the true state of the bridge ahead of planned full repairs, Naija News understands.

As earlier announced by the Lagos state government, the bridge would be closed to traffic from Friday 24th to Sunday 26th, August 2018.

The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mr. Adedamola Kuti, confirmed that the bridge would be closed to both pedestrians and motorists, while it would be reopened by12:00 midnight of August 26, 2018.

He said:“This is the time we can carry out the exercise, because after September, traffic in Lagos will be difficult to manage, since end of the year festivities would continue.

“Besides, we want to assure Nigerians that we are working tirelessly to bring sanity to Apapa-Oshodi expressway. We will do everything possible to complete the work on schedule.”

He urged motorists and other road users to make use of the alternative routes provided during the three-day closure of the bridge.

Motorists were enjoined to make use of alternative routes, which included “Ikorodu – from Ketu-Ojota to Fadeyi, motorists are urged to go through Funsho Williams Avenue to Apongbon /CMS. “They can also make use of Jibowu / Murtala Mohammed Way to Oyingbo /Iddo / Carter Bridge.

“For motorists coming from Lagos /Abeokuta Expressway from toll gate to Oshodi, down to Mushin to link Funsho Williams. Also, motorists from Gbagada Expressway from Berger or Ketu -Ojota Bridge /Ogudu Expressway to Anthony can link Ikorodu Road and continue their journey as stated above.”

Also, justifying the need the closure, Lagos state commissioner for works, Mr. Ade Akinsanya said: “The Third Mainland Bridge which was opened about 30 years ago by the then military government has had haphazard maintenance and repairs in the past which the present Federal Government is committed to correct by carrying out proper and continuous maintenance and repairs on it.”

He also urged all road users to corporate with traffic management officials to ensure the process is not burdensome.
