On Wednesday afternoon, Chelsea and Real Madrid confirmed one of the most anticipated trades in this transfer window. The Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, voted the best of the position in the World Cup, was sold by Chelsea to Real Madrid. As part of the deal, midfielder Mateo Kovacic, Croatia’s runner-up, will be loaned to the English club for a year. The figures were not disclosed.

Courtois had expressed his desire to return to the soccer of Spain in some occasions. His daughters live in the Spanish capital where the goalkeeper defended Atletico Madrid between 2011 and 2014. The contract of the Belgian is valid for six seasons.

Chelsea gave hints that it would trade Courtois on Tuesday hiring the young goalkeeper Kepa, 23, with Athletic Bilbao. The arrival of the Spaniard will be made official after he has passed the medical examinations.

Kovacic, a midfielder loaned to Chelsea for next season, also made clear his desire to change clubs. For Real Madrid, the Croatian disputed position with Casemiro, Kroos and Modric and was not used. So he wanted to leave the club merengue to have more minutes on the pitch.
