Back from the holiday after playing the World Cup in Russia , Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus announced on Friday the renewal of his contract with Manchester City . The 21-year-old, who joined the club in England earlier this year, has extended his tie for another two years. It would end in 2021, but will now only be closed at the end of the 2022/2023 season.

“I was very happy here, but I had two misfortunes to get hurt, it was very good, almost perfect, I like the city, I’m taking English, I’m going back to school,” said the 24-goal in 53 matches for Manchester City. “The (Spanish coach) Pep Guardiola played an important role in my hiring, but the club as well.”

The contract renewal announcement was made via a video posted by the club on its official website and on social networks. In it, Gabriel Jesus makes a call to tell the news to the mother Vera Lucia. Without knowing that it was being recorded, she first said that she would go out to put a button on her son’s shirt, before saying that he “is the guy”, to reveal that he does not know Pep Guardiola yet and send a kiss to the coach.

In the midst of the Brazilian team of coach Tite – who did not score even in the World Cup – Gabriel Jesus was hired by Manchester City in the middle of 2016 for 32 million euros (about R $ 138 million in the current exchange rate), but only left Palmeiras six months later. The striker had a blistering start with a goal, assists and the first most serious injury – a fracture in the fifth metatarsal of his right foot on 13 February. He only returned to the fields on April 27, which prevented him from participating in the knockout phase of the Champions League.

Last season, it went well in the first six months. But he was injured again when he suffered an injury to the medial collateral ligament of his left knee on December 31. He came back three months later and was able to play the final of the European season and the World Cup in Russia.

“I can say that coming to Manchester City was the best decision I’ve made in my life because I’m improving as a professional and as a person. City is a huge club and it’s getting bigger, I just want to thank for everything,” said Gabriel Jesus.

Football director Txiki Begiristain reaffirmed the club’s confidence in the Brazilian striker. “Gabriel is undoubtedly one of the best young strikers in world football, so having him committed to his future is a great stimulus for us,” said the Spaniard. “I know how much Pep (Guardiola) enjoys working with him and I’m really looking forward to seeing his development in the next few years.”
