Lagos Boat Tragedy Claims Five Lives

The death of five persons have been confirmed by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) in the tragic event of a boat capsize which occurred at Ebute Terminal, in Lagos.

According to the General Manager of LASEMA, Mr Adesina Tiamiyu, the agency received a distress call on the accident at about 5.57pm on Wednesday.

Commenting on the happening, Tiamiyu said on arrival at the scene of the accident, it was observed that a 20 capacity passenger boat belonging to Blue sea capsized mid-sea, while travelling to Ikorodu from Lagos Island.

“Unfortunately, five persons (four adult females and one adult male) were confirmed dead as a result of the incident.

“Their bodies were deposited at the morgue at Ikorodu General Hospital, while five persons (four female and onr male) were rescued alive,” Tiamiyu said.

He further stated that the reason for the accident is still been investigated.

Other agencies involved in the rescue exercise include the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) and the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU).

As at the time of filing this report, recovery efforts were still on-going.
