Judge Order INEC Chairman To Appear In Court Over Party Politics

INEC Boss Summoned To Court

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has requested for the presence of the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, to appear before it ,Daily Trust reports.

Naija News understands Justice Stephen Dalyop Pam ordered him to appear on August 1 to show reasons why he should not be committed to prison for allegedly violating valid court orders. The judge dismissed a preliminary objection by the INEC boss for being already in contempt of the court.

The contempt charge was filed against Yakubu by the chairman of the PDP in Anambra State, Ejike Oguebego.

The objection of the INEC chief to his appearance in court to explain why he should not be committed to two years imprisonment was said to be an abuse of court process and was subsequently thrown out.

The Supreme Court had directed INEC to recognise Oguebego as the authentic chairman of the PDP in Anambra State; and that the electoral body should relate with his executive committee in that capacity.

The apex court also directed INEC to accept the list of candidates for elective office from Oguebego group, but which the electoral body was alleged to have refused to adhere to, prompting the Oguebego faction to pray the court to jail the INEC chief for disregarding valid court orders.
