Sokratis Papastathopoulos Joins Arsenal From Dortmund

Arsenal have completed the signing of 29-year-old defender, Sokratis Papastathopoulos from Borussia Dortmund on a “long-term contract” for a fee believed to be in the region of €19 million (£16.7m/$22.4m).

The Greek defender becomes Unai Emery’s third senior signing of the summer who had earlier completed the signing of Stephan Lichtsteiner on a free transfer from Juventus and goal keeper, Bernd Leno who also moved from German club, Bayer Leverkusen.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Sokratis said: “It’s a beautiful moment and I’m very happy that I will be here for the next years.

“Arsenal is one of the three biggest teams in the Premier League and one very big club. It has a lot of fans and a very big history.

“Like I said before, I’m very happy that for the next years I will be here to help the team.”

Media reports indicate Arsenal are also interested in signing midfielder Lucas Torreira, from Sampdoria, though no deal is expected to materialize until the end of the Russia 2018 World cup tournament where the player is representing his country, Uruguay.
