1. President Buhari addresses Nigerians on democracy day

President Muhammadu Buhari, on the occasion of another democracy day in the country,addressed Nigerians in an early morning broadcast, Tuesday morning.

The President in his speech, appreciated Nigerians for their support for his administration and democracy as a whole, while promising to continue to deliver the change promised to Nigerians.

2. Lawmakers accused of demanding bribe before passing bills

A former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, has accused members of the National Assembly of asking for bribes to carry out their constitutional duties.

Prof Jega made the allegation while speaking at this year’s Democracy Day lecture at the International Conference Centre, Abuja on Monday.

3. Suspected herdsmen storm Taraba catholic seminary

Gun carrying criminals, suspected to be herdsmen, launched an attack on a Catholic seminary in Jalingo, Taraba state, on Monday morning, injuring some priests and students.

A priest was reportedly shot during the incident while others were also beaten up during the attack.

4. JAMB denies setting Arabic questions for Police recruitment test

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has expressed disappointment over allegations that Arabic was made compulsory for those who wrote the Computer Based Tests (CBT), for police recruitment last week.

JAMB, in a statement by its Head of Media, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, described the allegations as false, malicious and wicked.

5. Boko Haram suicide attack kills 5 in Maiduguri

Five persons have been reportedly killed in two separate attacks by suicide bombers who detonated their bombs at Mashamari area of Konduga, 35 kilometres (20 miles) southeast of the Borno State capital, Maiduguri.

The bombers reportedly detonated their explosives inside a house and near a mosque.

6. Take anti-corruption war to national assembly, Jega tells Buhari

Prof. Attahiru Jega, the former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), charged President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday to take his anti-corruption campaign beyond embezzlement.

Jega specifically implored President Buhari to beam his anti-corruption searchlight on National Assembly committee chairmen who asked for bribe to pass budgets of Ministries Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and when they go on oversight function.

7. Peace Corps bill not dead – Akoh

Dickson Akoh, national commandant, Peace Corps of Nigeria (PCN),has said that the corps is not dead and promised that they would remain focused despite the debate going on over the passage of the bill by the senate.

He expressed optimism that the bill would still be signed by any Nigerian president.

8. President Buhari to sign “not too young to run” bill

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday promised to sign the “Not too young to run” bill in a few days.

He made the promise in a nationwide broadcast in commemoration of the Democracy Day. The bill seeks to reduce the minimum age requirement for elective positions in the country.

9. Democracy has not served ordinary Nigerians – NLC

The leadership of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) says Nigerian democracy, after 18 years of civilian government, has served only the political class and not the average Nigerians.

The labour body lamented that those that were elected as democratic leaders have not only turned around to serve themselves but continued to exploit every given opportunity to “turn the rest of us into paupers in our own land.”

10. DR Congo holds Nigeria to 1-1 friendly draw

Nigeria’s Super Eagles were forced to a 1-1 draw in an international friendly game played in Port Haccourt on Monday.

Nigeria took the lead before DRC equalized and the game ended all square even as players tried to avoid injuries ahead of the World Cup games.
