Rohr To Drop Five Players After Friendlies

Report making rounds has it that five players would be dropped from the 30-man Eagles World Cup squad after their friendly with DR Congo on Monday by Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will Play DR Congo on Monday in Port Harcourt, then move to London to play another friendly against England on June 2.

The Nigeria coach told reporters at a press briefing in Uyo on Friday that after the five players will leave the team after Monday’s match while the others will travel to London for the England match.

As at Friday, there were 29 players in the team’s camp in Uyo with Chelsea star Victor Moses allowed to join the rest of the squad in London after Monday’s game.

Rohr will name his final 23-man squad for Russia 2018 before the FIFA deadline of June 4. The Eagle will play their final friendly against Czech Republic in Austria on June 6.

Meanwhile, Rohr has insisted he does not regret leaving out players like Kelechi Nwakali and Usman Mohammed, who shone in the friendly match against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night in Uyo, from his World Cup squad.

The two players, who scored Nigeria’s two goals, were the stars of the match in the 3-2 loss to the Europa League champions in the GOtv Max Cup.

There are no regrets because Atletico played their second team and it was a holiday game for them,” the German said.

“The list of 30 is a good one with very interesting players. They did so well to qualify us for the World Cup from a very difficult group. And it would not be normal to have players from the B team (going to the World Cup).

The coach said his regret was that there has been a lot more talk about the players who did not make the preliminary World Cup squad than about those who did.
