Under Graduate Tow Away Neighbour’s Car At Night

An under-graduate of a Nigeria University, Opemiposi Okunuga, who happens to be 21 years old, has been brought before a magistrates court sitting in Ikeja for allegedly stealing his neighbour’s car and reselling it.

The suspect, who is resident in Oke-Odo, Abule-Egba, a Lagos suburb, was brought before the court with a charge of stealing, however, Okunuga pleaded not guilty to the charge

Sgt. Godwin Awase, the Police prosecutor, told the court that the accused committed the offence on May 1 at his residence.

The Police prosecutor revealed that the suspect stole a car belonging to Mr. Ola Oladipupo, the complainant, who happens to be his neighbour and the value of the car is yet to be ascertained at the time of the court case.

Report has it that Mr. Oladipupo, on the day of the crime, had parked his car in the compound and at night the accused allegedly towed it to an unknown location.

The complainant discovered in the morning that his Mazda car was missing from where it was parked.

“He raised alarm and a neighbour told him that he saw the accused towing the car away from the compound,” he said.

Awase said the complainant reported the case at the Police Station which lead to the arrest of the accused.

According to him, the accused had made a confessional statement to the Police that he sold the car at Abule-Egba for N120,000 and all efforts to trace the buyer were unsuccessful.

The offence contravened Section 287 (5b) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

Mrs. F.F. George, the Magistrate, who ruled over the case granted the accused bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

George said the sureties should be gainfully employed, with an evidence of two-year tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

The case was adjourned until May 23 for mention.
