Former IG, CP In Court Over Alleged N16.4m Fraud

The former Inspector-General of Police, Sunday Ehindero, and former Commissioner of Police, John Obaniyi, has been arraigned by the Independent Corruption Practices and Other Related Offences Commission(ICPC) on Thursday for alleged N16.4 million fraud.

The defendants are standing trial on a five-count charge bordering on fraud and conspiracy before an FCT High Court, Apo,

Mr O.G. Iwuagwu, The prosecutor, disclosed to the court that the defendants committed the alleged offences between May 2006 and November,2006.

The Prosecutor disclosed that the suspect conspired to place N500,000 on fix deposit, money which was part of the N 557,995,065, donated by the Bayelsa Government to the Nigeria Police Force for the purchase of arms and ammunition.

The prosecutor said that the N500 million placed in fixed deposits yielded N16.4 million interest.

Kenneth Omoruan and E .O. Tela, the counsels to the defendant moved for the suspects to be granted bail after they denied committing the offences.

Justice Sylvanus Oriji, admonished the counsel to both defendants make the bail documents available to the court.

Thereafter, the judge granted them bail in the sum of N10million each and two sureties each in like sum.

The case was adjourned until June 19, and 26 for hearing.
