Nobel Prize In Literature For 2018 Cancelled Over Sexual Misconduct Scandal

Sexual Allegations Force Cancellation Of 2018 Nobel Prize In Literature

Speculations on whether the Nobel Prize in Literature will not be awarded this year have been finalized as Swedish Academy revealed today that it would not hold this year.

Recall Naija News reported that the Swedish Academy plunged into crisis over allegations of rape and sexual assault by the husband of one its members, and may therefore be forced to postpone the 2018 Nobel Literature Prize.

The cancellation comes as the organisation are still dealing with the sexual assault accusation.

This is the first time since 1949, that the jury which handles the world’s most prestigious literary awards will not announce a winner this year, but would announce two winners in 2019.

Swedish times announced the conclusion after a meeting held yesterday.

The Swedish Academy said that it took the decision “in view of the currently diminished academy and the reduced public confidence in the academy”.

According to Anders Olsson, interim permanent secretary of the academy.”The active members of the Swedish Academy are of course fully aware that the present crisis of confidence places high demands on a long-term and robust work for change. We find it necessary to commit time to recovering public confidence in the academy before the next laureate can be announced. This is out of respect for previous and future literature laureates, the Nobel Foundation, and the general public,”

The decision however, does not affect the other Nobel prizes, which are awarded separately.
