Man Bags Jail Term For Stealing Mattress

A 23-year-old man, Emmanuel Chukwu, is to spend four months in prison, for stealing a mattress, after the ruling of a Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja.

The Judge, Abubakar Sadiq, however, also gave the accused an option to pay fine of N10,000 while warning others to desist from such act and noted that the punishment would serve as a deterrent for those who want to commit the crime in the future.

Naija News learnt Chukwu, who lives at Mamasa Estate Galadima Gwarimpa, Abuja, was convicted on a count of theft.

He begged the court to temper justice with mercy after pleading guilt to the offence.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Zannan Dalhatu, told the court that  Chukwu’s neighbour, John Nwaru, reported that the accused stole a 10-inch mattress belonging to him ,at the Gwarimpa Police Station, on April 21.

Dalhatu said the offence contravened Section 288 of the Penal Code.
