Presidential Panel Frees 80 Prisoners in Jigawa

The Presidential committee on Prisons reform and decongestion, inaugurated by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Hon. Justice Abubakar Malami (SAN) and chaired by the chief Judge of FCT Hon. Justice Ishaq U. Bello were in Dutse, Jigawa State Capital today 21/ 03/2018 for decongestion and assessment of Prisons facilities in the state.

The chairman was accompanied by the representatives of the CGP and member of the committee ACG(OPS) Abubakar Garba, the representatives of chief justice of Nigeria and National Security Adviser (NSA) among other members.

At the Government House in Dutse, the chairman welcomed the Executive Governor to look into the predicaments of the Prisons in the State and extend a helpful hand towards the reformation, rehabilitation and reintegration of the inmates.

Responding to his speech, the Executive Governor Alh Mohammed Badaru Abubakar mon Mni agreed to pay the fines of 80 inmates, relocation of Dutse Satellite Prison and the completion of juvenile Prison in Babura LGA.

Mean while, the Committee visited Dutse satellite Prison where inmates were seen, interviewed and released based on fines paid, ill-health and age. other officers in charge stations were at the scene and their warrants were seen and vetoed for release.

77 inmates are for fines paid, 2 for ill-health and 1 for attaining 85 years of age. The committee chairman thanked the Executive Governor for the proposed relocation of Dutse satellite Prison.

In his remarks ACG (OPS) Abubakar Garba thank the Executive Governor of Jigawa state for the assistance he has been rendering to the Prisons on the issue of payment of fines and provision of skill acquisition materials to enable the inmates learn one trade or another during their stay in the Prisons.
