Women Can Now Join The Military: Saudi Arabia

In a recent move to enact reforms granting females more access to a wide range of previously forbidden careers, Saudi Arabia today announced that women are now permitted to work in its army.

Naija News gathered that women are now eligible to apply for positions with the rank of soldier in the provinces of Riyadh, Mecca, al-Qassim and Medina.

Applicants must be Saudi citizens and between the ages of 25 and 35 with a high school certificate.

According to the Saudi Arabia’s guardianship system, women could only apply to join the army in the place where their male relatives resides and works.

Recall Naija News had earlier reported that the country announced its plan to allow women to drive from June, and commercial ride apps are looking to employ female drivers.

Furthermore, Naija News learnt that Saudi women in January were given permission to attend football matches and start businesses without permissions from their male relatives.

The kingdom also opened 140 positions for women at airports and border crossings, which attracted 107,000 female applicants. according to the government.

However, human rights activists insist that the Saudi male guardianship system still remains, despite plans of government to abolish it.
