Gunmen Kill 41 Persons In Zamfara State

Gunmen, on Thursday, invaded Birane village in Zurmi local government area of Zamfara state, killing at least 41 people.

The assailants were said to have intercepted a canter vehicle carrying bridesmaids and traders to the community market, during which they slit the driver’s throat and then shot sporadically at the vehicle, killing all on board.
The gunmen men reportedly set the vehicle ablaze after killing all on board.

After the ambushing the said vehicle, the assailants headed to the community market and started shooting sporadically, causing panic amongst the traders, who ran for their dear lives.
A resident, identified as Hussaini Abdu, told Vanguard that:

They arrived in large number and on motorbikes intercepting and killing people who were coming or going out of the village. About 41 people were shot dead within a short period of time.”

Abdu also revealed that commercial motorcycle rider carrying a woman and her three children was murdered while his bike was set ablaze. However, the eye witness added that the no one knows the where about the woman and her children.

Speaking on the attack, the spokesman of the state Police command, DSP Muhammad Shehu said the clash occurred after hunters and local vigilantes mobilized and launched a pre-emptive attack on the gunmen after hearing that the assailants were planning to launch attack on their community.
Shehu said: “You know Birane is a very remote community. Yet, I can’t tell you the actual figures of the casualties till after the Deputy Commissioner operations of the command comes back. He, alongside other officers are there to assess the situation and provide additional security measures.”
