Mr. Cyril Ramaphosa has been sworn in as the interim president of South Africa, few hours after Jacob Zuma bowed to pressure, on Wednesday night to resign as the president.

Ramaphosa, who was Zuma’s deputy, was elected president of South Africa by a parliamentary vote, and was sworn in as head of state by South Africa’s chief justice in Cape Town, today.

Zuma, who came to power in 2009, was compelled by his party, African National Congress (ANC) to resign following corruption allegations leveled against him.

The ANC had told him to step down or face a vote of no confidence in parliament.
