Unknown gunmen have attacked Bakin Kogi village, Jema’a Local Government Area of Kaduna State, killing four and leaving one severely injured.

The attack on the village happened on Sunday with residents confirming the fatal incident.

The villagers disclosed that the victims were palm wine tappers who came from a neighbouring community to transact business, while their gunmen waylaid them in the bush.

The locals added that although one escaped with severe wounds, four of the victims were killed.

According to Daily Sun, a resident speaking on the grounds of anonymity said: “Those that were killed were not members of Bakin Kogi, they were palm wine tappers from another community.

“They were in the bush tapping palm wine when they were attacked by unidentified gunmen. I cannot tell you where they came from for now.

“But they are not from our community here. Policemen have visited the place and evacuated their bodies. The area is calm as I speak with you.”

Another source revealed that “the attackers, in their numbers, stormed the village around 9.00 am from the outskirts of the village and shot at innocent persons, killing four and injuring one. Other people at the scene escaped unhurt.”

The Spokesperson of the Kaduna State Police command, ASP Mukhtar Aliyu, apparently confirmed the attack, Daily Sun reported.

The ASP said: “The divisional police officer and the area commander are collating assessment reports at the affected community.”

However, the Commissioner of Police of the command, Austin Iwar, requested some time to give details of the incident.

He said: “I cannot confirm this to you now. Give me till tomorrow.”
