Gov. Calls For Peace Over Killing Of Driver Allegedly By Policeman

Following the killing of a taxi driver by a suspected policeman, and subsequent protest by youths, the Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, has appealed that peace is upheld, over the confrontation between some angry youths and mobile policemen.

The unfortunate incident occurred on Tuesday happened when a policeman pushed a taxi driver into an oncoming petrol tanker resulting in the latter’s death.

The accident which happened at Upper Igun area, by 3rd East Circular Road Junction, in Oredo Local Government Area of Benin City, the state capital, infruriated the youths, making the stage a protest.

Consequently, Obaseki has appealed to the aggrieved parties to allow for peace to reign, while guaranteeing that justice would be served.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Communications Strategy, Mr Crusoe Osagie, the governor urged the warring parties saying they should, “Allow for justice to run its due course, as efforts are underway to ensure that those liable for the crime are brought to book.”

He also condemned the fact that the incident degenerated into the civil disturbance, noting that there were better ways to resolve the scuffle.

The statement read in part: “The relevant security agencies are on the alert to quell further breakdown of law and order in the area. We also appeal to the people to be calm and cooperate with security agencies to bring in those responsible for the unrest.”
