1. Obasanjo registers as a member of the coalition for Nigeria

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has formally registered as a member of the newly launched Coalition for Nigeria.

The activity took place at the NUJ press centre, Iwe iroyin, Abeokuta in Ogun state.

2. Court supports Senate over Magu case

A Federal High Court in Abuja has upheld the powers of the Senate to confirm or reject the statutory nomination of a candidate for the position of Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The Senate, has hailed the judgment of the court and called on President Muhammadu Buhari to substitute the acting chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Ibrahim Magu, with a credible candidate, in line with the judgment.

3. Buhari did not follow federal character in his appointments – Obasanjo

Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has spoken against President Buhari’s lop sided appointments into various positions in his administration.

He claimed the president didn’t obey the principles of federal character in his appointments.

4. APC reacts to unveiling of coalition for Nigeria

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has reacted to the launching of the Coalition for Nigeria movement.

The APC, in a statement by its national publicity secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdulahi, said the prospect of a coalition does not in any way threaten the existence of the party.

5. Governor Ishaku alleges plan to attack Taraba state

Governor of Taraba State, Mr. Darius Ishaku, has alleged there are plans by certain culprits to attack the state in the next 10 days.

The governor also said the information had been passed to security agencies, and was awaiting action from the security agencies.

6. IGP orders clamp down on militias and vigilantes over killings

The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, yesterday ordered state commissioners of police to as a matter of urgency disarm all militias, vigilantes and other security outfits not empowered by the constitution to carry weapons.

He said the Nigerian Constitution made it clear that only the security agencies were empowered to carry arms and ammunition.

7. Reps divided over decision to deduct $1b to fight Boko Haram

Members of the House of Representatives were divided, yesterday, over a motion to deduct 13 percent derivation from the $1 billion approved for the fight against insurgency and general security in the country.

Members were divided on whether 13 per cent derivation should be deducted and paid to the Niger Delta States, or not.

8. President Buhari nominates new CBN deputy governor

President Muhammadu Buhari has written to the Senate, requesting the confirmation of the appointment of Mr Edward Lametek Adamu as the new deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Adamu, is from Gombe State and is set to replace Mr. Suleiman Barau who retired in December, 2017.

9. Senate launches probe into Lassa fever

The Nigerian Senate has mandated its committees of Health (Secondary and Tertiary) and Primary Healthcare and Communicable Diseases, to investigate steps taken by the Ministry of Health to curb outbreak of Lassa fever across the country.

The disease has so far affected 13 states namely: Edo, Ondo, Ebonyi, Nasarawa, Imo, Kogi, Bauchi, Anambra, Benue, Federal capital Teritory, Abia, Ekiti and Delta.

10. Ozil signs new long term contract with arsenal

Mesut Ozil has signed a new long term contract with Arsenal after months of speculations on the player’s future.

The deal will keep him with the Gunners till 2021.
