An Abuja Federal High Court has authenticated the Senate’s rejection of Mr. Ibrahim Magu as acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The court ruled in favour of the Senate stating that the Upper Chamber has the right to choose “only suitable and credible persons for appointment” to office.

The court’s pronouncement was revealed to journalists on Wednesday by Senate spokesman Aliu Sabi Abdullahi, after plenary.

The court judgement was made in the suit challenging the Senate’s authority to disallow an appointee the office of Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) under the EFCC Act.

Naija News recalls that in 2016, the Senate had rejected Magu’s appointment after a security report from the Department of State Services (DSS) showed he failed an integrity test.

However, Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, who was then acting president, declared that Senate actually lacked the powers to confirm such appointments.

Following the court’s ruling, the Senate has charged President Muhammadu Buhari to adhere to the court’s judgment, which it states that it validate its powers of confirmation and rejection of the president’s appointments.
