Former aviation minister, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, today failed to appear in court in a case involving the laundering of over N4.9 billion in which he was allegedly involved.

His failure to appear in court was attributed to a heart-related ailment as disclosed by his lawyer, Norrison Quakers (SAN).

Based on the request of his counsel, Fani-Kayode’s trial was adjourned by Justice Rilwan Aikawa of the Lagos division of the Federal High Court.

The counsel promised to produce a medical report to back up Fani-Kayode’s claim and absence in court.

In his reaction, the prosecuting counsel for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Rotimi Oyedepo, did not object to the adjournment but noted to Justice Aikawa that according to the provision of Section 396(4) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015, no party, in a criminal case, could have more than five adjournments.

The case was thereafter adjourned till  February 28 and March 1 and 2, 2018 by Justice Aikawa.

The former minister is standing trial alongside former Minister of State for Finance, Nenadi Usman, one Danjuma Yusuf and a company, Joint Trust Dimensions Limited on the 17-count charge bordering on alleged conspiracy, unlawful retention of proceeds of theft and money laundering.
