20 People Die In Auto Crash Along Kaduna-Abuja Expressway

Accident Scene [File Photo]About 20 people have lost their lives in a road accident along Kaduna-Abuja Express way on Sunday night.

The incident was made known by the Sector Commander of the Federal Roads Safety Corps in Kaduna State, Umar Ibrahim yesterday.

The fatal accident happened around 7 p.m. at Dutse U-turn, 22 kilometres from Kaduna city, Umar told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

The Sector Commander added that car crash involved a white DAF articulated vehicle with registration number: AJG118XA and a white Toyota HAICE bus with number plate XA866MLF, adding that the 16-seater bus was filled with 30 passengers, 29 males and a female travelling to the southern Nigeria.

He said:“The bus was not only overloaded with passengers but also choked with dismembered motorcycles belonging to the passengers.”

The auto crash happened when the bus coming from Kaduna axis collided with into the truck which was coming from Abuja and was trying to make a U-turn at Dutse.

17 people, who comprised more than half of the passengers, died on the spot due to the overloading of the bus, Umar said.

He added that “Ten others sustained injuries and were rushed to the hospital by an FRSC official, where three of them also died.”

The FRSC official disclosed that the truck was going to evacuate cows from a broken down truck which was close to the crash site.

Traffic jam lasting about four hours, had built up on the Kaduna-Abuja expressway due to the fatal crash. that lasted about four hour.

Hence Umar said: “we had to divert traffic to single lane before we were able to clear the wreckage and allow free flow of traffic.”
