The Adamawa State government said it has registered 64 grazing reserves and gazetted 30 out of them across the state.

The State Commissioner for Livestock Production, Isah Salihu, who disclosed this to newsmen on Thursday, said the move was to enhance the federal government’s plans to establish cattle colonies.

“The State Government has already registered 64 grazing reserves out of which 30 were gazetted. The development was to complement federal government’s cattle colonies programme,’’ Mr. Salihu said.

The commissioner said that cattle business contributes about 37 per cent yearly to the state’s Gross Domestic Product, GDP.

He called on the federal government to hasten the construction of the three pilot grazing reserves in the state.

Mr. Salihu therefore, condemned the anti-open grazing law enacted by some state government, describing the move as “unfortunate’’.

According to him, the development would not solve the lingering clash between farmers and herdsmen.

Naija News reported that some states have kicked against the establishment of cattle colonies, saying they have no land to cede to the herdsmen.
