President Muhammadu Buhari will today, Monday, meet with a delegation including political, traditional and opinion leaders from Benue State to exhaustively tackle security challenges facing the state.

The urgent meeting was expected because of the recurrence and level of violence in the state and the different reactions towards the incidents, a source in the Presidency stated.

The source said the presidency had been shamed by the mass murder caused by such recurrent violent activities against innocent Nigerians.

Pleading anonymity, the source said the meeting would address the issue of herdsmen attacks adding that ” it may go beyond their menace to include the issue of the arming, training and financing of militia groups by some state governments.”

When contacted on the development,

Mr. Buhari’s spokesperson, Garba Shehu, however said, though he was aware of the expected discussion with Benue leaders, he was yet to be briefed about the matters to be discussed.

Shehu added that the government welcomes any initiative by any group that would provide lasting solutions to the country’s security problems.

Mr. Shehu said security requires collective collaboration of all and it was, in his view “better for all to come together to find solutions instead of anyone trading blames.”
