Herdsmen Allegedly Kill Farmers In Nasarawa, Destroy Houses

Herdsmen launch another attack in Nasarawa.

Suspected herdsmen have launched another attack on residents of Awe village, Nasarawa State, killed scores of farmers and set houses ablaze.

The attack by the marauding herdsmen started since the beginning of the New Year in Benue State, many people have died and several critically injured as a result. Several attacks have also been launched in other state like Kaduna and Rivers by unidentified gunmen, killing scores of people. Another attack was carried out in Kwara State on New Year day.

Naija News gathered that many people were killed in the attack on Awe community, a border community of both Nasarawa and Benue states by the armed herdsmen, and several farm settlements were destroyed.

The President of Tiv Development Association in Lafia, Mr. Benard Kyegna, said on Thursday, “On New Year Day, a man was macheted to death at Gidan Wurji in Awe Local Government Area while moving his farm produce to Awe town.”

“We also got a report that two farmers were reportedly murdered at Bakin Kortaa, a border settlement which is about 12 kilometres from the Benue/Nasarawa border at about 7pm. Also a report in my village (Kwarra), in Keana Local Government Area, has it that the marauding herdsmen equally gunned down three farmers while working on their farm.”

According to Punch, Mr. Terzungwe Tachin, who narrowly escaped death from the hands of the killer herdsmen, said that about eight farmers had so far been killed in different areas in the two council areas of the state earlier mentioned. He gave the names of areas as Tse Kwaghtser – Tunga settlement, Kuduku, Nyashashu, Obosidoma and Kaambe-Jangaru.

However, the Nasarawa State Police Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Kennedy Idirisu, said that only one person was killed during the attack.
