 Benue Killings: Youths Protest at major roundabout in Makurdi

Aggrieved youths have today, Wednesday trooped out en masse to the popular Food Basket Roundabout in Makurdi to protest the killing of no fewer than 30 people by herdsmen in Benue State.

Naija News recalls that persons alleged to be Fulani herdsmen invaded some parts of the Guma and Logo Local Government Areas of the state on New Year’s Day, with the assailants terrorizing the communities till the early hours of Tuesday.

The hoodlums burnt down houses and huts, while they shot sporadically killing and injuring scores of residents

The protest has resulted in a traffic jam in the axis, hindering vehicular movement of travelers plying through Makurdi, the state capital to the Northern and Southern regions of Nigeria.

The angry youths have demanded that President Muhammadu Buhari intervenes in attacks they termed “terrorist killings” in their state.

A number of the youths shed tears as a vehicle conveying yet another dead body passed the midst of the crowd to prove their claims of the ongoing killings, following a reported attack which occurred on Tuesday night.

The protest came barely 24 hours after the State Security Council meeting which held at the Government House in the state capital.

Addressing reporters shortly after the meeting on Tuesday, the state governor, Mr Samuel Ortom, said he had received reports of 20 persons allegedly killed by herdsmen in the state.

After an on-the-spot assessment visit to some of the affected communities, Governor Ortom said an additional 13 deaths were discovered, taking the number of those killed to 33.

The killing of another resident following Tuesday’s reported attack sparked the protest by the youths who have asked the President to come to their rescue.
