President-Elect George Weah Promises Change To Liberians

George Weah has reacted to the provisional results of presidential run off elections in Liberia as announced by the country’s National Elections Commission (NEC).

Reacting through his Facebook page, the former football star expressed deep appreciation for the support and trust he enjoyed at the polls.

“My fellow Liberians, I deeply feel the emotion of all the nation. I measure the importance and the responsibility of the immense task which I embrace today. Change is on.” He said.

The nation’s electoral boss, Mr. Jerome Korkoya, had on Thursday during a press confrence to announce preliminary results, disclosed that 98.1 per cent of the total votes cast in the polls had been counted.

According to votes so far counted, George Weah, who contested on the platform of the opposition Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) is leading with 720,023 votes which represent 61.5 per cent.

His challenger and incumbent Vice President, Joseph Boakai, of the ruling Unity Party (UP) comes in in distant second with 451,088 votes representing 38.5 per cent.

Weah is set to become Liberia’s 25th president when he takes over from current president, and Africa’s first female head of state, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf.
