NDLEA recounts giant strides against drug traffickers in 2017

The Edo state Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says its men effected the arrest of no fewer than 240 suspects for drug offences in the state in 2017.

The drug enforcement agency also stated more than 45,000 kgs of hard drugs, 10 vehicles and 3 motor cycles were impounded by the agency for drug related offences.

Edo State commander of the agency, Mr Buba Wakawa, made the disclosure in an interview with newsmen on Thursday in Benin.

According to him, 34 drug farmlands totaling more than 50 hectares, cultivating drugs valued at N2.9 billion have been destroyed within the year 2017.

29 suspects, with about 11,000 kgs of suspected cannabis sativa were also arrested by the command.

“For us, drug control managers in the state, this is a cause for concern.

“You can imagine the amount of money we have taken away from drug traffickers.

“And this is the one we were able to take out of illegal circulation.

“The implication is that it is a huge problem that needs the urgent and active participation of all stakeholders,” he said.

Wakawa, called for the provision of operational facilities such as vehicles to help in the war against drug trafickers as well as bed spaces for those undergoing drug rehabilitation processes.
