George Weah Announced As Liberia’s President Elect

From football pitch to presidential palace, George Weah is new president of Liberia.

Former football star, George Weah, has won the presidential run-off election in the West African country of Liberia.

The 51-year-old former World Footballer of the Year defeated his 73-year-old opponent and current vice president, Joseph Boakai to emerge the President elect of Liberia.

Weah took to his official Twitter handle @GeorgeWeahOff, to thank all his supporters, saying that he plans to liberate the country: “It is with deep emotion that I want to thank you, the Liberian people, for honouring me with your vote today. It is a great hope.”

He won thirteen out of fifteen counties to defeat Joseph Boakai who won only two counties.

Weah will become Liberia’s 25th President when he takes over from incumbent Ellen Johnson Sirleaf who is Africa’s first female head of state.

The ex-Liberian international is the only African to have won the prestigous Ballon d’Or.
