Appeal Court upholds 2-year imprisonment for 14 foreigners
An Appeal Court sitting in Lagos has upheld the two year’s imprisonment imposed by the Federal High Court in Lagos on 14 foreign nationals.
They suspects identified as citizens of Russia, Ukraine, Philippine and Japan, were convicted for illicitly dealing in more than one million metric tons of petroleum product in 2015.
The foreign nationals were convicted along with their vessel, MT Anukt Emerald, and two firms– Monjasa DMCC, and Glencore Energy UK Ltd.
The trial judge, Justice Ibrahim Buba convicted the foreigners on five counts and sentenced them to two years’ imprisonment in 2016 each starting from when they were arrested by the Nigerian Navy.
The judge, gave them the fine option of paying 5 million naira instead of going to jail
