Zimbabwe: African Union speaks on Mugabe’s removal

AU reacts to Zimbabwe crisis, calls for peaceful resolution.

The Chairman of the African Union (AU) Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, on Wednesday spoke on the removal of Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe.

Mahamat, in a statement in Addis Ababa, said he was following the developments in the country, calling on the Zimbabweans to address the current situation in the country in line with the country’s constitution.

He appealed to the people to utilize the relevant instruments of the African Union, including the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance to resolve the crisis on ground.

He added that the crisis should be resolved “in a manner that promotes democracy and human rights, as well as the socio-economic development of Zimbabwe”.

“The Chairperson of the Commission expresses the commitment of the African Union to working closely with the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the leaders of the region, and to support their efforts,” Mahamat said.

It would be recalled that Mugabe was booted out of office in a bloodless military coup after ruling for 37 years.
