-Segun Oni faults the timing and actual car gift given to ex-governors in the state by Gov. Ayodele Fayose.

-Oni described it as misplaced priority as the Fayose administration owed several months of salaries and benefits to workers in the state.

Engr. Segun Oni condemns Fayose’s car gift to former governors.

Former Ekiti state governor and Deputy National Chairman (South) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Engr. Segun Oni, has explained why he recently rejected a N52 million Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) gift from Governor Ayo Fayose.

The former governor spoke through the Director-General of his Campaign Organisation, Dr. Ife Arowosoge, citing sympathy with the people of Ekiti who he claimed have been denied their salary for several months by the Fayose led administration as reason behind his rejection of the car gift.

Fayose recently gave out brand new SUVs to all former Ekiti State governors excluding his immediate predecessor and current Minister of mines and steel development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi.

The gesture, according to Fayose, was to appreciate the ex-governors for their sacrifices and contributions to the development of the state.

However, Oni not only rejected the gift, but condemned the timing of Governor Fayose’s decision to gift brand new SUVs while owing civil servants and pensioners in Ekiti state several months of salaries and benefits.

He said: “Although Fayose meant well with the gift, but the question is: why does he have to wait till this time before giving out the cars?

“The former governors are entitled to it. It is their right and privilege; not only the car but even residential houses, even at the Federal Capital. Why then does he have to wait till when he has less than a year to leave the office before recognising them?

“The timing to giving out a jeep of about N52 million at the time state local government workers and pensioners are being owed for several months is what we quarrel with, and not the gift.”
