Monkey pox confirmed in Delta state.

The Delta State government, on Wednesday, confirmed one case of the dreaded Monkey pox disease out of the five suspected cases earlier identified in the state.

According to reports obtained by Naija News, a total of five people have been quarantined, following suspicion that they may have contacted the monkey pox disease and one case has now been confirmed.

Information released to journalists by the state’s commissioner for Health, Dr. Nicholas Azinge, during the debriefing session from officials of National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) also told newsmen that other result of the test samples are being expected.

The other samples were sent to the laboratory in Dakar, Senegal.

5 local governments, identified as Aniocha South, Ethiope East, Ika North East, Ndokwa East and Sapele local government areas are the localities where the five suspected cases were initially detected.

Azinge, disclosed that 16 people have completed the necessary processes out of a total of 45 contact persons under follow up by relevant authorities.

Efforts are also been intensified towards constant border patrols of neigbouring council areas of Patani, Bomadi, Ughelli and Burutu to Bayelsa State with the view to preventing suspected cases from further entering into the state unnoticed.

Urging residents not to panic, the commissioner said government was in control of the situation as it has carried out sensitization of disease surveillance officers in the 25 LGAs in collaboration with the World Health Organisation and officials of the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).
