The Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has impounded 552 bags of copper sugar and 227 cartons of Tasty Tom Spaghetti to the tune of N9.3 million, allegedly smuggled into Kano State markets.

The confiscation was revealed by the State Coordinator of SON, Alhaji Yunusa Mohammed, on Tuesday at Karaye Local Government area during enforcement operation, NAN reports.

Mohammed said that the goods were discovered during a raid on major shops in the state.

He stated that part of the duties of the organisation was to ensure quality assurance and standardisation of products and make certain that people got standard and quality products.

Mohammed stated that sugar must have a purity colour grade of 145 icumsa and most of the sugars imported into Nigeria have high icumsa grade level, adding that the purity should be determined by the colour.

He further said that in the process of producing sugar, some chemicals were put into it which have health implications, if ingested.

According to Mohammed, “We will ensure that substandard products are taken out of markets in Kano and its environs.

“We are tirelessly working toward sustaining our enforcement efforts in the state and no stone will be left unturned in our crusade,” he said.
