-Academic activities may be grounded across public universities in the country as deadline looms for government to implement agreements with ASUU.

-ASUU had conditionally suspended its strike action to allow government time to fulfill promises made to the academic body.

There are strong indications that academic activities will be shut down across universities in the country if the government fails to fulfill its promises to the  Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) before the agreed time expires.

The academic body, recently called off its industrial action on the condition that the federal government would meet their demands before the end of October.

However, few days to the end of October, it has been alleged that the government has so far failed to implement any of the agreements reached between the ASUU and the federal government.

Before ASUU suspended the recent industrial action, the President of the Union had announced that they are suspending the strike to allow government commence implementation of the agreement between them.

A lecturer who spoke with the Nation on condition of anonymity about the impending strike action, said the union will not hesitate to resume its strike action if the government continues to ignore their demands.

He said, “the government has not done anything. We have not heard from them and it is just one week to the end of the October deadline. I can assure you that we are warming up and there is the possibility that from November 1, we will resume the suspended action.”

“They (government) told our leaders during negotiations that they have prepared everything for the implementation. They were even brandishing some papers, especially on the earned Academic Allowance. But we have not seen anything nor heard from them.”

The ASUU leadership, while suspending its strike action about a month ago, had warned that it was only conditionally suspending the industrial action to give government time to address the union’s demands.
