Court awards N2m against police over arrest of Evans the kidnapper’s in-law

The Lagos division of the Federal High Court, on Monday awarded a N2 million judgment against the Nigeria Police Force in the fundamental rights enforcement suit filed by one Mr. Okwuchukwu Obiechina said to be the brother-in-law of alleged kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, popularly known as Evans.
Justice Mohammed Idris, in a judgment on Monday, declared Obiechina’s arrest and detention and constitutional, holding that the remand order which the police claimed to have obtained from a magistrates’ court was invalid.
He also ordered the immediate, unconditional release of Obiechina by the police or that he be charged to court if the police have any case against him, the court also awarded N2m damages in his favour against the police.

The police were also ordered by Justice Idris to tender a public apology to Obiechina, and publish it in two national dailies.
