Paris Club Refund: Senate to debate governors’ request for more funds

Nigeria Senate has expressed plans to debate governor’s request for another portion of Paris Club refund from the federal government.

Senator representing Imo East Senatorial district, Samuel Anyanwu expressed worry over governors’ continued request for the funds.

He doubted that Paris Club refunds to governors were budgetted for, noting that President Muhammadu Buhari might be disbursing those funds illegally.

Anyanwu also recalled that President Buhari had admonished governors that were owing state workers’ salaries for months despite Paris Club Refunds in the past.

“Mr President, Distinguished colleagues, I rise through order 43 of Senate Rules to express worries over Paris Club Refunds to state governors”, he submitted.

“Sir, remember that Paris Club Refunds were never budgetted in the 2017 appropriation. You will note that Mr. President scolded State governors for not paying salaries of workers with the funds”, he added.

Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, in response ordered that the matter be brought in form of a motion at a future date to enable the lawmakers deliberate on it.

Paris Club Refunds had been released by Buhari-led administration three diferent times now for payment of State workers salaries with governors demanding more.

Meanwhile, some states likeEkiti, Kogi, among others have experienced strike actions and protests from workers, for non-payment of salaries despite federal government’s intervention.
