Jonathan celebrates Yakubu Gowon at 83

Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan has felicitated with former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (rtd) on the occasion of  his 83rd birthday, describing him as an icon of peace and unity.

A personally signed goodwill message by Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja on Thursday, described the former leader and statesman as an icon of peace.

Jonathan recalled that Gowon led Nigeria at a very crucial time in its history, stressing that he “strengthened the band that held our nation together.”

He said further in the tribute to Gowon: “As a statesman and nationalist, you have remained an inspiring figure and a moral conscience of the nation, because of your integrity and ethical
disposition to Nigeria’s growth and development.”

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, also described the former head of state as a peace loving leader, who fought to keep the nation united.

In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs in Abuja, Mr Turaki Hassan, Dogara commended him for his efforts at keeping the nation united.

“His Excellency, Gen. Gowon has been known for demonstrating uncommon patriotism, courage, vision and statesmanship as well as genuine commitment to national unity and integration,’’ he said.

“Gowon’s unwavering commitment, excellent leadership disposition, vision as well as his ability to galvanise the broad spectrum of Nigerian society.’’
