NUJ dissociates self from illegal award to Senator Melaye

-NUJ distances itself from planned award to Senator Dino Melaye and 14 others.

-The Union describes the Senate Press Corps as an unrecognized body.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has distanced itself from the proposed ‘Senator of the Year Award’ by the Senate Press Corps which it planned to give to Sen. Dino Melaye.

NUJ described the Senate Press Corps as an unrecognized body, hence has declared the award as illegal.

Information obtained by Naija News, reveals the corps had nominated Senator Melaye and 14 other senators for different categories of awards, slated to hold on Monday Oct. 9 at the Sheraton Hotel, Abuja.

However, in separate statements on Monday, the National President of NUJ, Abdulwaheed Odusile and the Chairman of FCT Council of the Union, Ella Abech, cancelled the proposed award ceremony and warned members of the public dealing with the corps as doing so at their own risk.

The union declared the Press Corp of the Senate was not recognised by the constitution of the NUJ and as such, had no powers to decide who the union would present awards to.

“The Union dissociates itself from the so-called conferment as it did not comply with the provision of the Constitution of NUJ on such issues, hence the nullification of the award,”he said.
