The world football governing body, FIFA, may sanction the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), as five people were confirmed dead and many others injured, following a stampede at the entrance of the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, on Saturday.

The stampede was due to the impatience of fans who wanted to gain entrance into the stadium during Saturday’s 2018 World Cup qualifier against Zambia.

The Super Eagles won Saturday’s game, courtesy of a second half strike by Alex Iwobi. A result which sends Nigeria through to the world cup tournament in Russia next year as group winners despite having a game left to play.

FIFA had earlier fined Nigeria 30,000 Swiss Francs (N11,049,557), for failure to control crowd at the same stadium during the world Cup qualifying game against Cameroon on September 1.

Information made available to Naija News, through the FIFA website, reveals the happenings contradicts articles 65 and 67 of the FBC FIFA stadium and security regulations.

Nigeria was therefore charged for “improper conduct amongst spectators (pitch invasions by supporters and invasions of restricted areas by supporters other than the pitch)”.
