The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed that it has tried on six different occasions to serve Senator Dino Melaye with the notice of petition as directed by the court.

The senator had petitioned a court to put a stop to his recall exercise by INEC, alleging that the decision was politically inclined.

Acting a court order, directing INEC to carry on with the recall process, the electoral umpire, in a statement, accused the lawmaker of thwarting its efforts.

The National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Solomon Soyebi, made the disclosure to Channels Television on Thursday.

“We have not been able to serve him just like you rightfully observed, we’ve made about six different attempts to serve Senator Dino Melaye the documents that the court said we should make available to him,” he said when he appeared on Politics Today.

Soyebi, however, stated that INEC is not moved by Senator Melaye’s refusal to be served but would rather await the decision of the appeal filed by the lawmaker, with regard for the rule of law.

He said, “We are not frustrated, we are waiting for the outcome at the Court of Appeal.”

“They gave us a date but we are trying to see whether we can have an accelerated hearing on this just like we had when we had the stoppage by the court.”
