– Death toll rises to 5 in Obosi gas cylinder explosion

One person has been confirmed dead while others are still in various hospitals recuperating as a result of cooking gas explosion which occurred last week at Obosi community in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

It was gathered that four people had died when a cooking gas cylinder exploded at Trinity Gas Limited Station at Obosi.

It was learnt that the explosion occurred when a five kilogramme cylinder that was being refilled burst open and ignited fire on other cylinders, both empty and filled ones.

Director of the plant, Mr. Uzo Nwanya, disclosed this when the executive members of Nigeria Association of Liquefied Gas Petroleum Marketers, NALGPM, paid a condolence visit to the plant.

Nwanya said among the five deceased persons, three were staff of the plant, while two others were customers.

Nwanya disclosed that his youngest brother, Somtochukwu Nwanya, a trained gas filler, was equally among those who died on the spot, while trying to close the tap to a big gas tanker.

He added that he succeeded in closing the tap, which prevented the flame from entering the big tanker, but he was burnt to death in the process.

He said though they were yet to quantify the extent of lost, the explosion damaged walls, roofs, scales, cylinders and louvres in the offices.
