Neymar’s proposed world record transfer to PSG may have suffered a huge setback as La Liga has rejected a €222 million cheque by his lawyer due to financial fair play regulations.

The 25-year-old had been widely expected to complete his move on Friday and join up with his new team mates ahead of  PSG’s Ligue 1 opener on Saturday against Amiens.

However, Neymar’s lawyer Juan de Dios Crespo had the cheque to trigger his €222m release clause rejected by the Spanish league on Thursday morning which may delay the Brazillian star’s move to PSG.

“We can confirm Neymar’s legal representatives went to LaLiga to pay buyout clause and it has been rejected,” La Liga said in a statement. “That’s all the information we are going to give for the moment.”

The decision to reject the attacker’s move now puts the transfer in a completely unprecedented situation, although the latest developments do not come as a surprise.

Recall that Naija News had earlier reported PSG’s resolve to land the Brazilian star amid strong interest from the player himself.

PSG will however, remain confident that the transfer can be forced through this summer as they look to restore some pride following their Champions League exit at the hands of Barcelona as well as loosing the Ligue 1 title to Monaco.
