Aluu 4: 1 Police Officer, 2 Others Sentenced to Death

High Court sitting in Rivers has found guilty, three out of seven individuals facing trial in the killing of four students of the University of Port Harcourt in 2012, popularly called Aluu4.

The court case presided over by Justice Nyordee also discharged and acquitted the remaining four, also standing trial.

The Judge, stated that the prosecution failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt, its case of murder against the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th accused persons beyond every reasonable doubt.

He however ruled that the 1st to 3rd defendants had been found guilty of murder.

Individuals sentenced to death comprise, Ikechukwu Luis Amadi, ex-Sergeant Lucky Orji and David Chinasa Ogbonda.

Other four suspects discharged and acquitted of the murder are; Abiodun Yusuf, Joshua Ekpe, Abang Cyril, and John Ayu.

Justice Nyordee in his Judgment held the accused persons responsible for carrying out a mob action without prior substantial facts about the action of the students.

The Judge said the death of the four children was a result of the disgraceful failure of security institutions especially in the area of intelligence sharing, adding that the Police, the C4i and the Joint Military Task Force failed in their responsibilities.

“You are found guilty in line with Section 319 of the Criminal Code cap 9. of the Laws of Rivers state.”

The Counsel Chukwueze Ifedi said the decision of the court was based on findings of the investigation.

Director of Public Prosecutions, Ibikiri Otorubio said the state will review the judgment and decide on the next line of action.

“What we can say is that the judge has done his part and we will do our own. We will study the judgment and take the next action,” he said.

Naija News recalls that this year, twelve people were standing trial for the murder of the young undergraduates, however, five were discharged early in the year.

Ugonna Obuzor, Toku Lloyd, Chiadika Biringa and Tekena Elkanah were murdered on October 5th, 2012 at Omokiri community, Aluu in Ikwerre Local government area of Rivers state.

Father of one of the killed students, Mike Torku expressed dissatisfaction in the judgment.

Torku said the only comfort from the court’s decision that the children who were wrongly killed have been exonerated of the alleged crimes that resulted in their death.

He also expressed gladness that the matter which has been on since 2012 has come to an end
