Customs officials in Hamburg have reported the confiscation of a record haul of 3.8 tonnes of cocaine worth $920m.

The tonnes of cocaine originated in South America, was displayed under tight security in a military barracks in the northern port city of Hamburg.

The drugs, displayed for the media and packed in colourful, shrink-wrapped plastic packages, were seized in three batches during customs operations in Hamburg’s harbour earlier this year.

This is the first time several tonnes of class `A’ drugs would be seized by German customs.
