Boko Haram Suspects Die from Torture of Cameroonian Security Officials

Some Boko Haram suspects have died in Cameroon custody,from the the brutal torture of security operatives.

Amnesty International disclosed the torture, which is part of the Cameroonian security officials strategy to clamp down on the terrorist group, on Thursday.

Originating from Nigeria, Boko Haram haas crossed the shores of the country to cause frequent attacks on neighbouring countries Cameroon, Niger and Chad.

Amnesty International revealed that they had discovered 101 people who disclosed that were captured and tortured by the Rapid Intervention Battalion (BIR) and the General Directorate of External Research (DGRE), Cameroon’s intelligence services, between March 2013 and March 2017.

According to the NGO, “They asked me to tell them if I knew members of Boko Haram. That’s when the guard tied my hands and feet behind my back and started to beat me with an electric cable, while throwing water on me at the same time,” Amnesty cited a prisoner as saying. “They beat me half to death,” he added.

The NGO added that the BIR headquarters in Salak and a DGRE facility in Yaounde are the locations where most of the torture occurred.

The group’s report, “Cameroon’s Secret Torture Chambers: Human Rights Violations and War Crimes in the Fight Against Boko Haram”, also stated that 32 of the 101 individuals, claimed to be witnesses to the death of a fellow prisoner.

While visiting the BIR base in Salak, US and French military personnel urged the two governments to investigate whether or not illegal detention and torture occurred on site.
