Over 150 People Killed During Communal Clash

Over 150 people have been killed during a communal clash between the people of Wanikade and Wanihem communities in Yala LGA of Cross River State.

The Director General of Cross River State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Mr. John Inaku, made this known in a phone conversation with Daily Post on Monday, while lamenting that about 14, 000 have been displaced and about 1,233 apartments have been destroyed.

“Yes, over one hundred and fifty (150) people have been killed, the situation is terrible, we wonder how human beings could be so hardened that ‎they murdered their fellow human beings in such a way; it’s sad.”

Mr. Inaku revealed that the communal clash emanated as result ownership dispute over a parcel of land in the area. He added that residents of about 41 villages are currently being harboured at a neighbouring Oju LGA of Benue state.

He added that the affected communities have been evacuated and left abandoned. However, over 4, 000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) are presently in need of shelter and humanitarian supports.

The Director said four IDPs camps have been established in Oju LGA by Benue State government catering to the displaced persons from about 41 villages.

Affirming Mr Inaku’s statement, The Secretary of Yala local government area, Mr Samuel Oko said the IDPs have arrived Oju in Benue State and that their host communities have provided them with food and shelter.

Mr Samuel added that some of the victims of the clash are being camped in schools, community halls and churches, with little or no food, water, sleeping materials and cooking utensils.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Irene Igbo confirmed that more security operatives have been deployed to the area.
